Epic Win

 So, the thursday night league of the last draw started up last night. And once I got over how much of a sausage fest thursdays are...we played really well together. We won 9-3 in 6 ends. Pretty cool. The four of us fit in well with each other. My husband commented that everyone wants to be in the position they are in, so it works.

 I played all right. I did have a good takeout on my second rock of the night. I struggled a few times with my guard weight. The ice seemed to be moving VERY fast (yeah - blame the ice!) and I ended up throwing a few out the back of the house. Oh well. The other teams lead was having just as bad of a night as I was.

 Next time we practice, I want to fix my guard weight. I'm starting to think I never really had *it*. I just had "beginner weight" which at the time would sort of translate into guard weight. We'll see.

Tonight is open fun night again. And again I am going solo. Stupid hockey season tix, the husband already has plans.

winners!!

 We won last night! 8-7 in 8 ends. It was a really good game. We had two 3 point ends, which was a little wild. It was without the husband though, he was pretty sick. One of his co-workers subbed in for him, and the sub fit in well. I played second, which was good since it gave me an excuse to work on my takeouts. I had a couple really good ones. A couple others would curl too much before their intended targets, sometimes taking a hard left on the ice. I was also able to go from takeout weight to guard weight a little better.

 Today, now I'm the one home sick! I hope I'm better for the thursday night game. This will be my first time playing on Thursdays, and I'm a little nervous.

Monday Night Open League

 Tonight is our regular Monday night open league at 8pm. Before the start of the new draw, we worked it out with the drawmaster to have our Toronto travel team play together. It was a little against the rules, since he usually makes the teams. But we wanted as much practice together before March. 19th. And he was very cool to let us do that.

 Practice on Saturday night went well. The other girl on our team has more experience than the rest of us, plus she has played competively. She walked us through some drills she knows, and they helped a lot! At least for me. When I paired her drills with keeping my head up (!!), I was doing good. Afterwards, the husband and I practiced some takeouts. Towards the end, I was getting there all right. Then I wanted to back it up a little and try to throw some guards. For the last draw, going from throwing takeout weight to guard weight was always a little hard for me to do. But I used some of the stuff I learned from one of the drills and I was able to dial it back a little. Wasn't perfect, but with a little more practice I think I can figure it out better. I lost track of how many rocks I threw by the end, but man, was I sore! My sliding leg was very sore, cause I was trying real hard to keep control of my slides. I've always been a little wobbily, and I'm trying to work on that.

This is a big f$%&ing deal!

Gotta love Uncle Joe. Yes, last night I was Vice. VICE!! This was mostly because I had a little more experience than others on my team. I really liked playing with the guy who was our skip. He was very helpful in explaining what he wanted out of every shot he called. And he would walk through our options with me before he left to take his shots. At one point he asked ME what he should do...So I just had him repeat his last shot!! It was really all I could see. I was totally out of my element, but I hung in there all right. We lost, but it was close in every end. The other team had to fight for their points.

On a personal note, one of my best shots last night happened when I held my head up through the entire shot. haha. Funny how relying on your hand-eye coordination actually works for you!! I have this bad tendency to look down at the rock a lot during my shots. Maybe I should stop doing that... ;}

Tonight our Toronto travel team is getting together at the club. This is the first official practice for the Spring Thaw bonspiel at East York Curling Club.

Welcome To My Blog

 Welcome to my blog about Curling. I am fairly new to curling, I started playing in October 2010. My home club is the Rochester Curling Club in Rochester, NY. My husband and I have been fans of curling for a while, and last year we decided to give it a try. We love it! We curl 2-3 times a week, and recently the hubby participated in the 72nd Annual GNCC Francis Dykes 5 and under tournament. In March we are traveling to Toronto for a one day bonspiel at the East York Curling club (more on that later.) Also coming up in the spring is a few friendlys our club has set up with Utica and Pittsburgh. Can't wait for the one with the Yinzers.

 Along the way, I'll be posting about my various trials and tribulations with curling. Maybe I'll even post a few pictures or videos of my better stuff! Ha.
